Syrian official says lifting EU sanctions is a complex process

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – An official at Syria’s caretaker government stated on Thursday that lifting sanctions on Syria is a complex issue that will take time.

His statement to North Press came after a meeting with a European delegation in Damascus.

Mohammad al-Atassi, Director of Planning and International Cooperation at Syria’s caretaker government’s Ministry of Finance, described the meeting as an opportunity to establish connections, noting that the European partners expressed their willingness to assist the Syrian people in various sectors.

Regarding sanctions, he emphasized that this was the primary topic of discussion, explaining that since the sanctions were imposed at the European Union level, the process of lifting them is complicated and requires time.

He also noted that he “observed sincere intentions from the European side regarding the lifting of sanctions.”

When asked about financial aid from European countries, al-Atassi clarified that no form of financial assistance was discussed during the meeting.

On Wednesday, a delegation from European Union visited Syria’s Ministry of Finance and discussed the potential lifting of financial sanctions on Syria.
