Syria, Germany discuss sanctions, economic support

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Finance Minister in the caretaker government, Mohammad Aba Zaid, met on Wednesday with Germany’s acting Chargé d’Affaires in Syria, Björn Gehrmann, at the ministry’s headquarters to discuss the potential lifting of financial sanctions on Syria.

During the meeting, Aba Zaid and Gehrmann explored ways to ease financial restrictions on Syria and support critical sectors to alleviate hardships faced by the Syrian people.

Earlier this month, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced that Germany would provide financial aid to Syria while emphasizing that sanctions against members of the ousted regime must remain in place.

Aba Zaid welcomed Germany’s efforts toward lifting sanctions, expressing hope that Germany’s perception of Syria will evolve.

For his part, Gehrmann stated that, after a 14-year diplomatic hiatus, “there are numerous questions regarding Syria that need to be addressed.”
