U.S. to work on political solution in Syria – American researcher
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – American researcher stated on Sunday that the current U.S. administration will work toward a political solution between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the new administration in Damascus, while continuing the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).
Meghan Bodette, Director of Research at the Kurdish Peace Institute in Washington, said in a statement to North Press, that “the new U.S. administration will prioritize a political solution in Syria and the eradication of ISIS.”
Bodette emphasized that the U.S. administration will prioritize efforts to achieve a political resolution between the SDF and the new Syrian government in Damascus, alongside initiatives to unify Kurdish political discourse.
She further highlighted that a political solution in Syria would have far-reaching effects, not only stabilizing Syria but also influencing the broader Middle East region.
Bodette underscored that achieving regional stability hinges on several factors, chief among them being continued international support for the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and the SDF to ensure the complete defeat of ISIS.
She stressed the urgency of establishing mechanisms to prosecute ISIS members responsible for crimes against humanity, particularly targeting Yazidis and Christians.
The American researcher warned that failing to hold ISIS members accountable would undermine justice and potentially enable the group to rebuild its capabilities and carry out new attacks across the region.
