QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Media Center of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Sunday that three children were injured in a landmine explosion left over from the war in eastern Raqqa, northern Syria.
According to the SDF statement, the incident occurred while the children were playing near remnants of war on an embankment between the villages of Ghanem al-Ali and al-Buhamad.
The injured children were immediately transported to hospitals in Raqqa for medical care.
The statement also noted that the Raqqa Military Council, affiliated with the SDF, has begun combing the area to clear and dismantle any remaining landmines.
The sounds of explosions heard in the area were reportedly caused by the detonation of other war remnants, the statement added.
This tragic incident follows another deadly occurrence on Jan. 22, 2025 in Deir ez-Zor, where five people, including two young sisters, were killed in two separate landmine explosions.
Earlier in January, UNICEF reported that at least 116 children were killed or injured in December alone due to hidden threats like unexploded ordnance and landmines, underscoring the devastating impact of war remnants on vulnerable populations.
