Kurdish-led SDF Extends Final Deadline for Syria’s Former Regime Forces to Surrender Weapons

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Saturday that it has extended the deadline for remnants of Syria’s former regime forces and members of the disbanded National Defense Forces to surrender their weapons. The new deadline is set for February 10, 2025.

In a statement published on its official channels, the SDF explained that the decision to extend the deadline came “in response to requests from local community leaders and elders in the region, and to prevent chaos and instability.”

Disarmament Efforts Since December

The SDF, along with the Internal Security Forces (Asayish), has been actively working to collect weapons and ammunition from individuals associated with the fallen Assad regime and the defunct National Defense Forces. This campaign follows the regime’s collapse on December 8, 2024.

The statement noted significant progress, with many individuals already complying with the disarmament initiative. “A large number of these individuals have responded to the call and handed over their weapons and public property that was in their possession,” the SDF said.

A Final Warning

Despite the progress, the SDF emphasized that this extension represents the “final deadline.” After February 10, those who refuse to surrender their weapons will face legal action. “Anyone who refuses to comply will be prosecuted according to the law,” the statement warned.

Community Involvement

The extension highlights the role of local communities and tribal elders in encouraging compliance with the disarmament initiative. SDF leaders have reiterated the importance of community cooperation in maintaining security and stability across North and East Syria.

Preventing Instability

This latest move is part of broader efforts by the SDF to consolidate security and prevent potential unrest in the wake of Syria’s political and military upheaval. Observers believe that ensuring the disarmament of former regime loyalists is critical to fostering stability in the region.

The SDF’s campaign reflects its ongoing commitment to transitioning North and East Syria into a secure and unified region as part of a broader vision for a stable and democratic Syria.
