U.S. shares secret intelligence with Syria’s new administration
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – American officials announced on Friday that the United States has shared secret intelligence with Syria’s new administration.
According to The Washington Post, U.S. officials confirmed that American authorities provided intelligence to the new Syrian caretaker government regarding threats of the Islamic State (ISIS) following the fall of the previous regime.
On July 11, the Ministry of Interior in Syria’s caretaker government reported thwarting an attempted attack by ISIS targeting the shrine of Sayyida Zainab near Damascus.
The officials clarified that the exchange of intelligence with Damascus does not signify full support for Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). They added that the information was shared directly between American officials and representatives of HTS.
They further disclosed that intelligence meetings involving HTS took place in Damascus and in a third country.
Additionally, the officials revealed that U.S. intelligence warnings played a key role in preventing the attack on the Shrine of Sayyida Zainab in Damascus.
