DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Ahmad al-Shar’a, the leader of Syria’s new administration, hosted Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan in Damascus on Friday in a high-profile visit aimed at revitalizing ties between the two Arab nations.
Bin Farhan’s visit to Syria comes after a stop in Beirut, where he held discussions with Lebanese officials. In Damascus, he was received at the People’s Palace by al-Shar’a, signaling an intent to reset relations following years of strained ties during Syria’s civil war.
A New Chapter in Relations
A Syrian official, speaking to AFP, noted that al-Shar’a is keen to “open a new chapter” in relations with Riyadh. The visit marks a significant moment in Syria’s efforts to reestablish diplomatic ties across the Arab world.
Arab diplomatic sources in Damascus told the German Press Agency (DPA) that Syria’s leadership views bin Farhan’s visit as a “crucial step in strengthening Arab unity.”
Focus on Regional Cooperation
While specific details of the discussions were not disclosed, the meeting is expected to have covered several key issues, including regional stability, economic cooperation, and Syria’s reconstruction efforts.
The Saudi Foreign Minister’s presence in Damascus underscores Riyadh’s readiness to engage with Syria’s new leadership, paving the way for potential collaboration on shared regional challenges.
Arab Reengagement with Syria
Bin Farhan’s visit follows a gradual warming of ties between Syria and other Arab states, reflecting a broader trend of re-engagement with Damascus. Analysts believe that this rapprochement may play a critical role in fostering regional stability and addressing long-standing issues stemming from Syria’s decade-long conflict.
The visit is widely seen as a pivotal moment in restoring Syria’s place within the Arab League and strengthening its ties with Gulf countries.
