EU diplomat links lifting sanctions on Syria to inclusive transition

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated on Friday that the lifting of EU sanctions on Syria depends on tangible steps taken by the caretaker government in Damascus.

In a brief statement shared on the X Platform, Kallas emphasized during her meeting with Asaad al-Shibani, the Syrian caretaker government’s foreign minister, that the new administration must initiate a peaceful and inclusive transitional process that safeguards the rights of all minorities.

Only then will EU foreign ministers discuss easing the sanctions, Kallas remarked.

Earlier in January, Kallas hinted at specific conditions for lifting the EU sanctions imposed on Syria during Bashar al-Assad’s tenure. These sanctions currently target 318 individuals and 86 entities under EU restrictions.

The EU Council had recently decided to extend the sanctions framework for another year, keeping it in effect until June 1, 2025.
