DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Wednesday that the risk of Syria’s division remains high amid ongoing fragmentation in several regions.

Speaking at a panel discussion during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Guterres highlighted the challenges facing Syria’s political and economic recovery efforts under the new administration following the fall of the Assad regime.

Persistent Challenges

“The threat of division in Syria persists, especially considering the existing fragmentation in some regions,” Guterres stated. He acknowledged signs of openness from Syria’s new leadership but emphasized the need for concrete actions to Aaddress the country’s enduring political and military challenges.

Call for Inclusive Governance

Guterres stressed the importance of forming a government that represents all minorities and communities in Syria, calling it a crucial step toward stability and reconciliation.

“There are still significant questions about Syria’s future,” he said. “We hope that the new administration’s words will translate into tangible progress.”

Sanctions and Humanitarian Concerns

Addressing the impact of international sanctions on Syria, Guterres urged global powers to consider steps to alleviate their effects on the Syrian population.

“Sanctions have caused harm to the people of Syria. As a first step, we should consider easing them while ensuring that progress toward a unified and inclusive Syria is made,” he added.

A Fragile State

Syria remains at a critical juncture, with internal conflicts and regional power struggles exacerbating its fragility. Guterres’s remarks underscore the urgency for collaborative efforts to prevent further division and foster a sustainable peace.

The UN chief’s statements come amid ongoing negotiations and diplomatic efforts involving key stakeholders in the Syrian crisis, including talks between Syrian, regional, and international actors.
