ALEPPO, SYRIA (North Press) – Two civilians were killed, and 20 others, including four journalists, were injured on Tuesday in a Turkish airstrike targeting a convoy of Syrian civilians near the Tishrin Dam in Aleppo’s countryside.
The airstrike, which occurred around 1:30 PM local time, is the latest in a series of Turkish attacks on civilian gatherings near the dam. The Tishrin Dam is a vital piece of infrastructure for northern and eastern Syria, and the area has become a focal point of tensions.
Repeated Targeting of Civilians
According to local sources, the convoy was heading toward the dam in an effort to protest Turkish shelling on the critical facility. Turkey has been accused of systematically targeting the dam, which supplies water and electricity to vast areas of northern Syria.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which controls the area, condemned the airstrike in a statement on their official website, labeling it a “deliberate and blatant violation.”
“In a continuation of its deliberate violations, Turkey targeted a civilian gathering near Tishreen Dam, causing fatalities and injuries among the local population,” the SDF statement said.
Journalists Among the Injured
Local sources confirmed to North Press that the airstrike caused the deaths of two civilians and left 20 others injured, including four journalists who were covering the protests.
The identities of the victims have not been disclosed, and the injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
A Humanitarian and Environmental Crisis
The Tishrin Dam is not only a key source of electricity and irrigation for northern Syria but also a symbol of the broader struggle for stability in the region. Ongoing attacks on the dam and surrounding areas threaten to deepen the humanitarian crisis, jeopardizing water and power supplies for millions of residents.
SDF Pledges Protection
The SDF has vowed to continue protecting the region and its infrastructure. They have called on the international community to take immediate action to halt Turkey’s escalating aggression.
“The international silence on Turkey’s violations is emboldening its actions, risking the lives of civilians and threatening essential infrastructure,” the SDF stated.
The situation remains tense, with fears of further attacks in the coming days. The region’s residents and leaders are appealing for urgent intervention to prevent further casualties and preserve critical resources.
