By Kardo Roj
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Nicholas Granger, Director of the Syria Regional Platform at the U.S. State Department, emphasized on Wednesday that the United States remains steadfast in its partnership with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Speaking to Rudaw TV, he reaffirmed that the U.S. is closely monitoring developments under the new Syrian administration and maintaining communication with diverse Syrian communities.
Granger stated that it is essential for the SDF and interim authorities in northeastern Syria to engage in serious dialogue about the country’s future. He also stressed the importance of U.S. support for the Syrian people, which includes efforts to build a unified, free, stable, and prosperous nation that reflects the will of all Syrians while respecting their rights.
Commitment to Essential Services and Political Transition
The U.S. official underlined the critical importance of providing essential services and operating government institutions amid the ongoing challenges in Syria.
Granger noted, “The U.S. is proud to support the Syrian people in their efforts to establish a unified state that respects all citizens. The provision of basic services and functional governance during this critical period is a priority.”
Inclusion of All Syrians in Political Dialogue
On the topic of political inclusivity, Granger highlighted that all Syrians, regardless of ethnicity or background, must play a role in shaping the country’s future. He said, “After more than 50 years under a brutal Assad regime and over a decade of conflict, it is vital that Syrians—Kurds, Arabs, and others—participate in the political and social life of their nation.”
Granger reiterated that the U.S. continues to advocate for a Syrian-led, non-sectarian political transition that represents the diverse fabric of Syrian society, including women and men from all regions and communities.
Monitoring the New Syrian Administration
When asked about the U.S. stance on the new Syrian administration, Granger stated, “We are closely monitoring the steps taken by the new administration. We expect them to follow through on their commitments not just with words but with concrete actions.”
He emphasized that the U.S. remains vigilant and communicative about its expectations, aiming to support a transition that is inclusive and beneficial for all Syrians.
Addressing Designations of Terrorist Entities
In response to a question about the potential removal of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its leader from terrorist designation lists, Granger clarified that any decision on this matter would be handled separately. He did not elaborate further but indicated that the process would involve careful consideration.
Granger concluded by reaffirming the United States’ dedication to engaging with interim authorities and a broad range of Syrians to ensure an inclusive, sustainable future for the country.
