DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Iraqi authorities announced on Wednesday the arrest of a woman accused of being a financial officer for the Islamic State (ISIS) in Hawija, Kirkuk Province, following an intelligence-led operation.

The arrest was carried out by the Intelligence Division of the Iraqi Army’s 8th Brigade, marking a significant success in ongoing efforts to dismantle ISIS networks across the country.

Intelligence Operation

According to Iraqi security sources, the arrest followed a “highly precise intelligence operation” involving extensive surveillance and fieldwork.

The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody under Article 4 of Iraq’s Counterterrorism Law. She has been handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal procedures.

Role Within ISIS

The suspect reportedly held the position of financial guarantees officer within the ISIS organization. She was responsible for distributing financial aid to the families of ISIS members in the Hawija region, the sources added.

Hawija, once an ISIS stronghold, has been a focal point for Iraqi counterterrorism operations since the group’s territorial defeat in 2017.

Broader Counterterrorism Efforts

In 2024, Iraqi Counterterrorism Services reported the arrest of 84 ISIS members, including senior leaders, under Article 4 of the Counterterrorism Law. These operations have also led to the destruction of over 260 ISIS hideouts, particularly in the vast Anbar Desert, a known refuge for ISIS remnants.

Continued Vigilance

Despite its territorial defeat, ISIS remains a persistent threat in Iraq, with sleeper cells actively engaging in sporadic attacks and recruitment. Iraqi forces have ramped up intelligence-driven operations to mitigate the threat and prevent the resurgence of the extremist group.

The recent arrest underscores Iraq’s commitment to rooting out ISIS influence, particularly in areas previously under the group’s control.
