Syriac-Assyrian community rally in Qamishli for equal rights in new Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syriacs and Assyrians held on Sunday a demonstration in the city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria demanding recognition and protection of their rights in a future democratic Syria.
The demonstration, organized by the Syriac Union Party, featured banners calling for a united, decentralized Syria that guarantees the national and religious rights of Syriac-Assyrian and Christian communities.
Gabriel Shamoun, member of the Syriac Union Party’s Executive Committee, emphasized the purpose of the protest saying, “We are here to demand the establishment of national and religious rights for the Syriac-Assyrian people in a pluralistic, decentralized, and democratic Syria.”
Speaking to North Press, Shamoun explained, “Discussions about Syria’s future constitution are ongoing, and we want to highlight the Syriac-Assyrian and Christian cause, ensuring our voices are heard by the international community.”
He stressed the importance of securing the rights of all national and religious components in Syria’s future to promote inclusivity and equality in a reimagined democratic state.
