Germany to provide more aid to Syria while supporting targeted sanctions
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – German Minister of Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock announced on Sunday that Germany will provide additional financial assistance to Syria, emphasizing that sanctions on individuals associated with the ousted regime must remain in place.
Baerbock revealed that Germany is pledging an additional €50 million to Syria to support food supplies, emergency shelters, and medical care for those in need.
She underscored the importance of maintaining sanctions on collaborators with al-Assad who have committed serious crimes, stressing that accountability is essential.
Baerbock added that they propose a targeted approach to sanctions, ensuring that the Syrian people receive relief and can swiftly benefit from a transfer of power.
Meanwhile, Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs José Manuel Albares echoed a cautiously optimistic tone, noting that the steps taken by the new administration in Syria have been positive so far.
Albares elaborated that the new administration in Syria has refrained from violence, ended al-Assad’s dictatorship, and released prisoners, which are signs they welcome.
