Germany’s envoy discusses future of Kurds in Syria with SDF Commander
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Germany’s special envoy to Syria, Stefan Schneck, said on Thursday that he recently discussed the future of the Kurdish population in Syria during a phone call with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief, Mazloum Abdi.
The conversation focused on the prospects for a peaceful future for the Kurds, ensuring all their rights within a unified Syrian state.
In an exclusive interview with North Press, Schneck shared that both he and Abdi discussed the possibility of integrating Kurdish rights into Syria’s national framework.
He emphasized that the new Syrian administration had already acknowledged the importance of this issue, underlining the necessity of turning these discussions into a national agenda for uniting the country’s forces.
Schneck also stressed the crucial role of dialogue in resolving Syria’s ongoing conflict, asserting that without a political resolution, the country would not achieve stability.
Germany, he said, is committed to supporting the success of this dialogue.
Regarding sanctions, Schneck expressed that Germany is keen to lift some sanctions, particularly sectorial ones related to electricity, aviation, and energy, to help rebuild Syria. He clarified, however, that sanctions against Bashar al-Assad and his allies would remain in place.
Schneck also praised the United States for lifting sanctions for six months, but noted that the European Union’s process is slower due to its 27 member states.
Despite this, he assured that Germany strongly advocates for the lifting of sanctions to aid Syria’s reconstruction.
