Issue with SDF needs political solution – Former US advisor

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A former U.S. State Department advisor and political figure emphasized on Thursday that Ankara must recognize that the issue with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) cannot be resolved through military force and systematic killing.

In an interview with North Press, Hazem al-Ghabra, a member of the Republican Party, criticized the idea of deploying American and French forces to secure the northern and eastern Syrian border areas with Turkey, calling it “insufficient.”

Al-Ghabra pointed out that Turkey has been using airstrikes and drones to target SDF forces, with the majority of casualties among the SDF resulting from aerial bombardments.

He argued that the current approach to border security is not enough to protect the region effectively.

The key to resolving the conflict, he stated, lies in a clear political agreement.

He added that Turkey’s demands for a resolution are vague and lack clarity, which exacerbates the situation and hinders progress toward peace.

On Wednesday, Ilham Ahmad, co-chair of the Foreign Relations Department in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), said that the United States and France could secure the entire border area in northern Syria.

“We ask the French to send troops to this border to secure the demilitarized zone, to help us protect the region and establish good relations with Turkey,” Ahmad said in an interview with TV5 Monde.
