Kurdish-led Asayish Condemns Turkey’s Escalation in Northeast Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Internal Security Forces (Asayish) strongly condemned Turkey’s recent escalation in northeast Syria, which on Wednesday resulted in civilian casualties and extensive damage to vital infrastructure.
The condemnation follows reports from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) earlier in the day about a Turkish drone strike targeting a convoy of civilians heading to the Tishreen Dam, leaving several dead and injured.
Escalation and Civilian Impact
In its official statement, the Asayish denounced Turkey’s continued attacks on critical infrastructure, calling the strikes a calculated effort to undermine essential services and exacerbate the suffering of local populations.
“Amid Turkey’s ongoing escalation in northeast Syria, recent attacks have targeted Tishreen Dam, a lifeline providing water and electricity for the region,” the Asayish said.
The Asayish warned of potential humanitarian and environmental catastrophes stemming from the destruction of vital infrastructure.
Civilian Attacks
According to the statement, a Turkish drone targeted a civilian Hyundai Santa Fe vehicle at the Karki Khajo intersection in the Dêrik area, killing one civilian and critically injuring another.
A separate drone strike hit a vehicle at an Asayish center in the village of Kark near Kobani, injuring a member of the security forces. The injured officer was taken to Kobani Hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.
Targeting Infrastructure
The Tishreen Dam, a critical source of water and electricity for northeast Syria, has come under repeated Turkish attacks. The Asayish emphasized that these strikes aim to cripple the region’s ability to sustain itself, deepening the humanitarian crisis for the local population.
“These deliberate attacks on vital infrastructure are part of a systematic plan to weaken the region’s stability and increase the suffering of its residents,” the statement added.
Broader Context
The recent escalation highlights the intensifying conflict between Turkey and the SDF in the region. Turkey has ramped up its military operations in what it claims is a fight against perceived security threats from Kurdish forces, which it associates with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
However, rights groups and local authorities have criticized Turkey’s actions, accusing it of targeting civilians and key infrastructure in violation of international law.
Humanitarian Concerns
The Asayish’s condemnation adds to a growing chorus of voices calling for international action to curb Turkey’s aggression.
“These attacks threaten to plunge the region into a deeper humanitarian crisis,” the Asayish warned, urging international organizations to step in and hold Turkey accountable for its actions.
As Turkey’s military campaign continues to escalate in northeast Syria, the toll on civilians and critical infrastructure is mounting. The attacks have drawn widespread condemnation and raised urgent calls for international intervention to prevent further suffering in the region.
