Turkish governor in Syria’s Afrin blocks to caretaker government
AFRIN, Syria (North Press) – A Turkish-appointed governor in Afrin region, northwestern Syria, reportedly refused to transfer the management of local councils to a delegation from Syria’s caretaker government, a source within the Afrin local council told North Press on Wednesday.
According to the source, officials from the newly formed Aleppo Provincial Council of the Syrian caretaker government arrived in Afrin with plans to oversee local councils in the Afrin region.
The source added that the Turkish governor, who directly supervises Afrin’s administration, declined to relinquish control.
The source indicated that the Turkish governor informed the visiting delegation that the matter would be discussed with the new Syrian administration at a later date.
Until then, the management of Afrin would remain under Turkey’s direct oversight, he told the delegation.
Since its occupation by Turkey in 2018, Afrin region has been administratively run by local councils under the supervision of a governor appointed by the Turkish government.
