Iraq completes 400 km of concrete barrier along Syrian border
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Iraqi authorities announced on Tuesday the completion of a 400-kilometer segment of a concrete barrier along the border with Syria, accompanied by the deployment of security units to fortify the area.
Tahsin al-Khafaji, head of the Security Media Cell, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the Ministries of Interior and Defense, the Joint Operations Command, and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) have implemented stringent measures over the past three years to secure the border with Syria.
Al-Khafaji highlighted plans to increase security forces in the region, emphasizing the ongoing efforts of security personnel working around the clock.
He ensured that the Iraqi border with Syria is safe due to intelligence operations, pursuit of sleeper cells, and continuous airstrikes.
Al-Khafaji added that the stability of the Syria-Iraqi border on his country’s side is very strong, assuring that they will not tolerate any breaches towards Iraq.
The concrete barrier spans the 615-kilometer border, with 400 kilometers completed so far. The remaining 210–215 kilometers are expected to be finalized by mid-year, eliminating any security gaps along the frontier.
This development comes as Iraq strengthens its border security measures following the significant offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which resulted in the fall of the Assad regime in Syria.
