Armed groups in Suwayda show readiness to integrate into new army
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Two of the most prominent military factions in Suwayda, southern Syria, expressed on Monday their readiness to merge into a unified military body, forming the core of a new national army for the country.
A joint statement issued by the Sheikh al-Karama Movement (Men of Dignity) and Liwa al-Jabal (The Mountain Brigade) factions in Suwayda revealed a new roadmap for the upcoming phase, aiming to build “a nation based on justice and the rule of law,” as outlined in the document.
The roadmap calls for the establishment of a state in which weapons are “exclusively held by a national military army,” with both factions reaffirming their willingness to integrate into a military body that forms the foundation of a new national army, rejecting any factional or sectarian identity.
The factions also expressed openness to dialogue with all Syrian parties, emphasizing communication with “free rebels,” as indicated in the statement.
Additionally, the factions committed to non-interference in administrative or political matters, while supporting civil and political work in a participatory manner and ensuring the protection of public facilities, according to the statement.
The roadmap emphasized that Damascus will “remain the eternal capital” of Syria.
In previous statements, the head of the Druze sect, Hikmat al-Hijri, stated that the disband of the armed factions in Suwayda and the surrender of weapons are contingent upon the presence of a strong Syrian army and a clear structural framework for the state.
