German official says working Syrian refugees can remain in Germany
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – German Deputy Chancellor Robert Habeck stated on Monday that employment is a key factor in determining the future prospects of Syrian refugees in Germany.
He emphasized that those who do not engage in work may need to return to Syria safely or could even face mandatory return.
According to the German Ministry of the Interior, approximately 975,000 Syrians reside in Germany, with most having arrived since 2015. Over 300,000 Syrians currently hold subsidiary protection status.
Habeck, the Green Party’s candidate for chancellorship in the upcoming general elections, told the German broadcaster Deutschlandfunk, “We can make good use of those who work here.”
Last week, a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior announced plans to expand a financial assistance program for Syrians wishing to return voluntarily.
Recently, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees had decided to suspend the processing of new asylum applications from Syrians. This decision comes in light of the rapidly changing situation in Syria following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
