Dutch FM highlights political transition as key to stability in Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Netherlands Kasper Veldkamp emphasized on Sunday on the need of “an inclusive political transition and the protection of minorities” in Syria.

Veldkamp underscored the importance of ensuring that Christian, Kurdish, and other minority communities actively participate in the political transition process, stressing the need for human rights to be respected throughout.

“The Netherlands believes an inclusive, Syrian-led political transition is key for sustainable stability in Syria,” Veldkamp said. “It is essential that Christian, Kurdish and other minority communities participate in this process and that human rights are respected.”

The statement followed a visit to Damascus by Dutch Special Envoy to Syria, Gijs Gerlag, from Jan. 2 to Jan. 4, 2025, as confirmed by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his visit, Gerlag explored potential avenues for the Netherlands and the European Union to support Syria’s political transition.

The minister noted that stability in Syria aligns with Dutch interests, particularly in combating terrorism and facilitating the return of refugees.

Veldkamp added that the Dutch envoy conveyed to the new Syrian administration that the Netherlands remains committed to seeking justice for human rights violations and carried a series of messages while assessing the current situation on the ground.
