First Syrian delegation visits Saudi Arabia since Assad regime’s fall
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs in the caretaker government, Asaad al-Shibani, visited on Wednesday Saudi Arabia, marking the first visit of a Syrian delegation after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
In a statement on X platform, al-Shibani expressed optimism about the visit, aspiring to open a new and promising chapter in Syrian-Saudi relations.
Leading an official Syrian delegation, al-Shibani landed in Riyadh after receiving an invitation from his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, earlier this week.
The Syrian delegation also included Defense Minister Marhaf Abu Qasra and head of the General Intelligence Agency Anas Khattab.
Late in 2024, Ahmad al-Sharaa, the de facto leader of the new administration in Syria, met with a Saudi delegation headed by an advisor in the royal court at the People’s Palace in the capital, Damascus.
The timing of the Syrian delegation’s visit coincides with the arrival of Saudi humanitarian aid in Damascus. The first aid flight, carrying 28 tons of medical, relief, and shelter supplies, landed at Damascus International Airport. The Syrian Red Crescent facilitated the reception and distribution of the cargo.
