U.S. will not abandon SDF in Syria – U.S. politician

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A member of the American Republican Party stated on Sunday that the United States remains engaged in Syria and will not abandon its partner in the fight against terrorism, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Hazem Alghabra, a member of the Republican Party, told North Press, “The stance of U.S. Congress members and the ongoing preparation of sanctions legislation send a clear message regarding northeastern Syria. Washington will not abandon its allies.”

He added that Turkey’s assumption that President-elect Donald Trump would show little interest in the Syrian conflict is misguided.

On Dec. 20, two U.S. senators introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at imposing sanctions on Turkey for its attacks on the SDF.

Alghabra added that Turkey assumed an unlimited green light from the U.S., particularly from President Trump.

He further noted that the U.S. recognizes opportunities for dialogue between Turkey and the SDF to address Turkish security concerns. “The U.S. sees the potential for a resolution and wants Ankara to play a constructive role in Syria following the fall of Assad,” he said.

Since the fall of the Syrian regime, Turkey and its affiliated armed factions, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA), have repeatedly attacked areas in northern Syria. The SDF has accused Turkey of planning to occupy Kobani and other Syrian territories.
