UNICEF says 4.6 million Syrian children face “dire” conditions

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) sounded on Wednesday the alarm over the worsening plight of Syrian children, with 4.6 million now living in “dire” conditions and in urgent need of basic services.

Edward Beigbeder, UNICEF’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, described the situation as “staggering” after a recent visit to Syria, saying, “The scale of the need was staggering.”

According to UNICEF, 7.5 million children require humanitarian aid, and 6.4 million are in desperate need of protection services.

Beigbeder also highlighted a troubling education crisis, with over 2.4 million Syrian children out of school.

He added that this alarming figure raises the risk of child labor, early marriage, human trafficking, and recruitment into armed groups.
