SDF Leader Proposes Demilitarized Zone in Syria’s Kobani

KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – General Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), announced on Tuesday their readiness to establish a demilitarized zone in the city of Kobani in northern Syria.

Turkey has been escalating its attacks in northern Syria, particularly targeting areas around Manbij and Kobani, through its allied armed factions for over a week.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Abdi reaffirmed the SDF’s commitment to achieving a comprehensive ceasefire across Syria.

“We announce our readiness to propose the establishment of a demilitarized zone in Kobani, with the redeployment of security forces under the U.S. supervision and presence.” Abdi said.

“This initiative is to address Turkish security concerns and ensure permanent stability in the region,” he concluded.

Turkish Escalation and Regional Stability

The announcement comes amidst heightened tensions in northern Syria, with Turkish strikes reportedly causing casualties and displacing civilians. The SDF’s initiative aims to prevent further military escalation and safeguard the region’s fragile stability.

Abdi emphasized that the proposed demilitarized zone could serve as a foundation for broader ceasefire agreements and long-term peace efforts in Syria.

The initiative also underscores the role of the U.S.-led coalition in mediating and supervising security arrangements, reflecting international involvement in de-escalating tensions between the SDF and Turkey.
