DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, social media platforms affiliated with the ousted Syrian regime briefly published a statement from former President Bashar al-Assad. The statement, addressed the circumstances surrounding his resignation and departure from Syria.
On December 8, Syrians were taken by surprise when the Assad regime collapsed, marking an abrupt end to over two decades of his authoritarian rule.
Assad’s Justification for His Departure
In the statement, Assad denied that his departure was premeditated, claiming it was a consequence of the deteriorating situation in Syria.
“A person who refused from the very first day of the war to exchange his personal safety for the survival of his homeland cannot be the same person who abandons his people or betrays his army,” Assad stated.
He further claimed that he was never in pursuit of power for its own sake but was instead motivated by what he called a “national project.”
“With the state falling into the hands of terrorism and the inability to offer anything meaningful, the position became empty of purpose, rendering my continuation in office meaningless,” Assad added.
An Attempt to Frame His Exit
The statement was filled with rhetoric aimed at portraying Assad as a leader forced to leave due to insurmountable challenges, rather than as a result of a military or political defeat.
He hinted at his resignation being an act of sacrifice, claiming that staying in power under the current circumstances would have no value.
