Germany warns Assad supporters involved in crimes not to seek refuge there

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – German Minister of Foreign Affairs warned on Sunday the former officials of the Syrian regime who committed crimes against the Syrian people not to attempt to hide in Germany.

In a statement to Bild am Sonntag newspaper, Annalena Baerbock said, “To any of (former President Bashar) Assad’s torturers who might be considering fleeing to Germany now, I can only say clearly: We will bring all the regime’s henchmen to account for their terrible crimes with the full force of the law.”

On Dec. 8, Bashar al-Assad’s regime fell after the Military Operations Command of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied factions reached the Syrian capital, Damascus.

She added that international security and intelligence agencies need to cooperate closely in this regard.

In the same context, German Minister of Interior Nancy Faeser said that there is security scrutiny at the borders, pointing out that “no one who participated in atrocities is safe from prosecution here.”
