Locals find mass grave of Syrian regime soldiers in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Residents discovered on Sunday the bodies of soldiers of the former Syrian regime in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria.
A local source said that residents of the city of al-Jalaa near the town of Abu Kamal found the bodies of thirteen artillery brigade soldiers stationed in the desert. The victims bore gunshot wounds and had been buried in a mass grave near their post.
The source told North Press that eyewitnesses reported the soldiers were killed about ten days prior in clashes with Iranian-backed militias seeking to seize their weapons and positions.
The clash resulted in the soldiers’ deaths, with the attackers stealing their weapons and other belongings. Meanwhile, surviving members of the brigade reportedly fled toward the Syrian-Iraqi border.
Residents later retrieved the bodies and buried them in the town cemetery. Two of the deceased were identified as originating from the Damascus countryside, while the identities of the others remain unknown, the source added.
