U.S. monitors power shift in Syria after Assad’s fall – U.S. politician

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A member of the American Republican Party said on Thursday that the United States is closely monitoring developments on the ground in Syria, striving to understand the groups that played a role in the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad.

Hazem Alghabra, a member of the Republican Party, told North Press, “At this moment, we do not fully understand the position of those now in control of Damascus regarding U.S. allies, including our Kurdish partners, the Syrian Democratic Forces, and other minority communities such as Christians and Druze.”

He added, “It is still too early for a comprehensive assessment, as less than a week has passed since the fall of Assad’s regime.”

On Dec. 8, the regime collapsed after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) seized the Syrian capital, forcing Bashar al-Assad to flee to Russia.

Alghabra emphasized that there are numerous unanswered questions for the United States at this time.

He noted that while HTS has issued positive statements following the fall of al-Assad’s regime, their actions raise concerns. “We are observing a rapid advance toward the northeast without any apparent effort to engage in a political process that could lead to an agreement. This is perplexing for us in the United States,” he remarked.

The American politician stressed that the new leadership in Damascus must recognize the critical role of the United States in facilitating international support. He warned that any actions perceived as violations of U.S. interests or targeting its allies in the region could significantly delay formal recognition or assistance.
