DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Pope Francis extended a message on Wednesday to Syria’s new ruling leadership, urging them to govern responsibly and foster national unity following the ousting of former president Bashar al-Assad.

During his weekly address at the Vatican, Pope Francis stated, “I hope they find political solutions that promote stability and unity in Syria in a responsible manner without further conflicts or divisions.”

Call for National Reconciliation

The pontiff also appealed to Syria’s diverse religious communities, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and collaboration. “I encourage all religious groups in the country to walk together in kindness and mutual respect for the good of the nation,” he added.

Post-Assad Transition

This message comes in the wake of significant political change in Syria. On Sunday, armed factions led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) seized control of the capital, Damascus, ending Assad’s reign and ushering in a new chapter for the war-torn nation.

The Pope’s remarks highlight the critical need for reconciliation and inclusive governance as Syria’s new leadership faces the daunting task of stabilizing the country amid ongoing tensions.
