Iranian FM reflects on Assad’s downfall, Syria’s future

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi shared on Monday insights from his final meeting with Syria’s ousted president, Bashar al-Assad saying al-Assad expressed surprise and frustration over the conduct of the Syrian army during their encounter.

Speaking to Iranian television about the latest regional developments, Araghchi recalled, “When I met al-Assad alongside Mr. Larijani, he seemed surprised and voiced complaints about the behavior of his army.”

He noted to systemic issues within the Syrian military, stating, “There was no proper analysis of the Syrian army, even within the Syrian government,” he said. “In my view, the army has become a ‘prisoner of psychological warfare.”

Araghchi also reflected on the long-standing ties between Iran and Syria, describing their 40-year relationship as spanning three major areas, one of which is the field of resistance.

“The resistance front has been facing significant challenges for over a year,” Araghchi acknowledged. However, he reaffirmed his belief in its resilience, stating, “Resistance will prevail regardless of circumstances.”

He indicated that it is an idealistic pursuit, not a conventional war, and that the path of resistance will not end, even if Syria steps out of its circle.

This commentary comes amidst a seismic shift in Syria’s leadership. On Sunday, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and allied opposition factions announced the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in a televised statement aired on Syrian state media.
