U.N. chief calls for peaceful political transition in Syria 

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres on Sunday called on the international community to support Syria in achieving an inclusive political transition that reflects the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians.

In a statement, Guterres emphasized the urgent need to avoid violence during this critical period of political change.

He highlighted the importance of safeguarding the rights of all citizens without exception and reaffirmed the necessity of restoring Syria’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity.

The Secretary-General also urged respect for diplomatic institutions, consulates, and their personnel, emphasizing their protection under international law.

These remarks come in the wake of significant developments in Syria, earlier on Sunday, it was announced that Bashar al-Assad, the long-standing president, has been ousted. Power has shifted to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied factions after 12 days of intense clashes with forces loyal to the former regime.
