HTS, Turkish-backed Factions Clash with Government Forces North of Homs
HOMS, Syria (North Press) – Heavy clashes broke out late Saturday between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Turkish-backed factions on one side, and Syrian government forces and allied militias on the other, on the northern outskirts of Homs, central Syria.
A military source close to the armed factions stated that the fighting, described as “fierce,” is concentrated around the northern Ghouta neighborhood of Homs.
“The clashes are part of an intense offensive by HTS and its allies aiming to expand control in the region,” the source told North Press.
Strategic Significance of Homs
Homs, one of Syria’s largest cities, is a crucial strategic and symbolic hub. The city lies on the main road connecting Damascus to Aleppo and other major provinces. HTS and opposition factions have been advancing toward Homs following recent gains in Aleppo and Hama, further challenging government control in central and northern Syria.
Government Retreat and Russian Airstrikes
Opposition media outlets reported that government forces have retreated from villages and towns near Deir Ba’albah, a key area in northern Homs.
Meanwhile, Russian warplanes launched multiple airstrikes targeting the HTS positions on the city’s northern outskirts, signaling Moscow’s direct involvement in the escalating conflict. The airstrikes reportedly targeted the active frontlines, but casualties remain unconfirmed.
The renewed conflict has intensified in the wake of the opposition forces’ significant territorial gains in Aleppo and Hama provinces.
Broader Implications
The clashes north of Homs are part of a broader offensive by HTS and Turkish-backed factions, which have gained momentum in recent weeks. Their push toward Homs is seen as an attempt to tighten the noose around Damascus, with some analysts describing it as a direct challenge to the Syrian government’s stronghold.
Recent advances by opposition forces have led to a rapid deterioration of the Syrian pound, plunging the already fragile economy further into crisis. The economic collapse has fueled discontent in government-controlled areas, creating additional pressure on Damascus.
Russian and Government Responses
Russia, a key ally of the Syrian government, has been ramping up military support, as demonstrated by Saturday’s airstrikes. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain, as opposition forces continue their coordinated offensive.
Despite the aerial bombardments, HTS and allied factions seem determined to consolidate their gains. “We will not stop until we liberate all Syrian territories from the grip of tyranny,” an HTS spokesperson declared earlier this week.
Humanitarian Concerns
The escalation in Homs has raised concerns about the potential displacement of thousands of civilians. Humanitarian organizations have called for immediate de-escalation and the protection of non-combatants, urging all sides to adhere to international humanitarian law.
The conflict, now in its 14th year, has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions, with no end in sight.
As the situation in Homs develops, the international community watches closely, concerned that the escalation could mark a new and bloodier phase in the ongoing Syrian conflict.
