Pentagon: Coordination with Syrian Democratic Forces SDF is Round-the-Clock
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Department of Defense spokesperson Patrick Ryder affirmed on Tuesday that the Pentagon maintains continuous coordination with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), underscoring their partnership in northeastern Syria.
The announcement comes amidst growing tensions in Deir ez-Zor, where the Deir ez-Zor Military Council, operating under the SDF, has taken responsibility for securing seven northern villages against threats from the Islamic State (ISIS).
U.S. Strikes in Deir ez-Zor
Earlier on Tuesday, the Pentagon confirmed that U.S. forces conducted airstrikes targeting rocket launchers and mortars that had fired on the Al-Furat military base, where U.S. personnel are stationed. The Pentagon emphasized that these actions were defensive and separate from the ongoing developments involving opposition forces advancing in Syria.
Ryder also highlighted the coalition’s commitment to supporting SDF efforts to counter ISIS threats, stating, “Our focus in Syria is on the enduring defeat of ISIS, working alongside partners like SDF, but that is what our mission is in Syria.”
Designation of HTS
Ryder reiterated the U.S. position on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), designating it as a branch of al-Qaeda. This clarification aligns with Washington’s broader policy of opposing groups it deems terrorist organizations, even as the conflict in Syria grows more fragmented.
Implications
The reaffirmed alliance between the U.S. and SDF demonstrates Washington’s continued investment in stabilizing northeastern Syria amidst complex dynamics, including threats from ISIS and tensions with Turkish-backed factions. The Pentagon’s statement also underscores the strategic priority of protecting U.S. forces in the region while addressing broader security threats.
Observers note that these developments highlight the enduring U.S. role in Syria, despite growing geopolitical shifts and domestic pressures to reassess military engagements abroad.
