AANES official warns of proxy war threatening Aleppo’s social fabric

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Ilham Ahmad, co-chair of the Foreign Relations Department in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), described the ongoing conflict in Aleppo Governorate as a dangerous proxy war that threatens the region’s social cohesion.

In a tweet shared on the platform X on Sunday, Ahmad warned that the systematic targeting of Aleppo, Syria’s most diverse city, endangers its unique “social fabric and pluralistic identity.”

She attributed the violence to the competing interests of Iranian-backed militias and Turkish-supported factions.

Ahmad expressed grave concern over attacks on Kurdish displacement camps and surrounding areas, highlighting the potential for further displacement and humanitarian suffering.

“These actions deepen fractures in the region, endangering coexistence and the cultural mosaic of Syria’s most diverse city,” she stated, calling for urgent attention to the conflict’s broader implications on Aleppo’s demographic and cultural makeup.
