3 police officers sustain injuries in clashes in Syria’s Suwayda
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Three police officers were injured early on Sunday in clashes with local armed groups in the city of Suwayda, southern Syria.
A source from a local armed group in Suwayda told North Press that the injured officers sustained minor wounds during the clashes and were transferred to the National Hospital in Suwayda for treatment.
The clashes coincided with the withdrawal of the Syrian government forces from military positions in the countryside of Daraa, following similar clashes in that area.
The unrest in Suwayda and Daraa follows a broader escalation involving Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, once known as the al-Nusra Front) and Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA), that have launched offensives in Aleppo, as well as the countryside of Idlib and Hama.
The source also added that sporadic explosions were heard throughout the night in neighborhoods in the city.
Meanwhile, unknown gunmen targeted the Air Force Intelligence branch headquarters and the Baath Party’s local office with RPG shells, escalating the security situation.
North Press correspondent cited a local armed group leader who said they had previously warned of potential escalation in the area. The leader emphasized the importance of a peaceful handover of the security branch headquarters to local groups to avoid further violence.
