Pedersen meets Jordan’s FM to discuss resolution to Syrian crisis

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, met on Tuesday with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to discuss ongoing efforts to achieve a political resolution to the Syrian crisis.

The opposition platform Syria TV reported that Pedersen is expected to arrive in Damascus today for a multi-day visit to address issues related to the Constitutional Committee.

During the meeting, Safadi underscored the importance of intensifying focused efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis comprehensively.

He stressed the need to safeguard Syria’s territorial integrity, restore its security, stability, and health infrastructure, and create suitable conditions for the voluntary return of refugees.

Pedersen, in turn, commended Jordan’s pivotal role in advancing efforts toward a resolution of the crisis.

In March, Pedersen proposed that Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, host the ninth round of Syrian Constitutional Committee meetings.

The eighth round of talks, held between May 30 and June 3, 2022, concluded without agreement between the parties. Both Damascus and Moscow have rejected Geneva as a venue for the next round, citing concerns over its neutrality.
