ISIS attacks kill 7 Iranian-backed militants in Syrian Desert

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – At least seven militants of Iranian-backed militias, including leaders, were killed on Monday night in a double attack by militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the Syrian Desert, central Syria.

A military source told North Press that the attacks occurred when dozens of ISIS militants launched an assault on the military headquarters of the Iranian-backed Afghan Liwa Fatemiyoun militia and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the eastern countryside of Homs.

The attack took place in the area between the city of Palmyra and the town of al-Sukhnah, using heavy and medium-caliber weapons.

The source added that the assault led to intense clashes, during which two Iranian-backed militants were killed and several others were injured.

In response, the IRGC deployed reinforcements to the area. However, the reinforcements were subsequently targeted by explosive devices planted by ISIS militants.

The source confirmed that these IEDs struck more than three military vehicles, resulting in the deaths of five additional Iranian-backed militants and causing injuries to others.
