Turkish border guards torture Syrian man to death

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Turkish border guards tortured on Sunday a Syrian man to death and severely injured two others while they attempted to cross the Syrian-Turkish border in the countryside of Idlib, northwestern Syria.

A medical source from Salqin Hospital told North Press that local farmers brought three critically injured young men to the hospital. They had been subjected to severe torture and beating by the Turkish border guards during their attempt to cross the border.

One of the men, identified as 28-year-old Khalaf Yasser al-Jumaa from al-Mayadin in Deir ez-Zor countryside, succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital. The other two individuals sustained serious fractures and injuries.

Sources noted that border security forces linked to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, once known as al-Nusra Front), arrived at the hospital and withheld the young man’s body from his family, demanding the presence of the smuggler responsible for arranging the crossing.

Opposition sources said that HTS’s border security unit, which counters human smuggling operations into Turkey, receives direct support from Turkish intelligence.
