Government forces shell Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian government forces shelled on Saturday the countryside of Daraa in southern Syria after clashes erupted with local armed groups.

A source from a local armed group told North Press that the government forces stationed at Brigade 52 launched mortar shells at areas surrounding the village of al-Kark Sharqi in the east of Daraa.

Tensions first escalated in al-Kark Sharqi after the government forces detained a local resident at a checkpoint.

The source added that the shelling came after intense clashes between local residents and the government forces near the village.

No immediate reports of casualties or material damage were available.

In a related incident, armed locals from the nearby town of al-Musayfirah targeted an Air Force Intelligence post stationed at the town’s cultural center, the source noted.

The source explained that the clashes were triggered by the detention of Muhammad Ali al-Darwasha, who was arrested last week while traveling to Damascus, where his son is receiving cancer treatment.
