Over 440,000 people cross from Lebanon into Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Tuesday that over 440,000 people are estimated to have crossed from Lebanon into Syria since the escalation began.
UNHCR estimated that around 71 percent of those who crossed are Syrian nationals and 29 percent are Lebanese citizens.
According to a joint assessment by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UNHCR 28, 834,746 Lebanese and Syrians have been displaced in Lebanon since Oct. 28.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese authorities said that approximately 1.2 million individuals have been impacted by the ongoing conflict.
In the wake of intensified airstrikes by Israel over the past month, Lebanon is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, the report added.
The UNHCR has identified over 75,000 refugees are experiencing secondary displacement since the escalation began, 98 percent of these displaced persons are Syrian refugees, with an additional 58,500 displaced since September 23 alone.
The U.N. agency estimates that at least 340,000 Syrian refugees were living in the most affected areas prior to the recent hostilities.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health stated that the latest round of airstrikes has resulted in approximately 2,672 deaths and 12,468 injuries.
