DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Israeli media reported on Thursday that Yahya Sinwar, head of Hamas’ political bureau, was killed in an Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip.
Photographs obtained by The New York Times show the body of a man whose facial features closely resemble those of Sinwar.
The Israeli army radio provided details of the operation, stating that the confrontation occurred in the Tel al-Sultan neighborhood of Rafah.
According to media reports, Sinwar was dressed in a military vest containing ammunition and hand grenades. He was accompanied by another senior field commander.
The military confirmed that there were no signs of Israeli hostages in the vicinity of the building where Sinwar was killed.
Yahya Sinwar had taken over leadership of Hamas in early August, following the assassination of his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran.
