Italian PM calls for EU review of Syria strategy

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on Wednesday for a review of the European Union’s strategy on Syria to create conditions for the voluntary, safe, and sustainable return of Syrian refugees.

Speaking to the Italian Senate ahead of an EU leaders’ meeting, Meloni stressed the need to work with all actors to facilitate this process.

She is expected to raise the issue of relations with Damascus during a meeting of the 27 EU leaders in Brussels, according to EU diplomats.

The ongoing conflict in Lebanon, which has led to the displacement of nearly 200,000 Syrians and Lebanese, has intensified discussions on the return of Syrian refugees.

Despite the growing momentum, there is no clear plan for how EU nations might engage with the Syrian government, with officials noting that open dialogue with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad remains a delicate issue.
