IRC warns of humanitarian crisis as thousands flee Lebanon to Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The International Rescue Committee (IRC) issued on Tuesday a warning about the worsening humanitarian crisis affecting over a quarter of a million Syrians and Lebanese fleeing conflict in Lebanon.
The IRC Country Director in Syria, Tanya Evans, emphasized that more than half of the new arrivals are women and girls, while over 60 percent are children.
Many of these displaced people have undertaken long, costly journeys, only to arrive with no resources to meet their basic needs, Evans said.
She added that onditions in camps, especially in Syria’s northeast, are dire, with overcrowding, inadequate water supplies, and insufficient materials to protect families from the elements.
The official also reported widespread psychological trauma among the displaced.
The IRC called on the international community to urgently scale up support for both the refugees and the host communities struggling to accommodate them.
