Drones destroy weapon depot near Russian airbase in Syria’s Latakia
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A series of drone strikes targeted on Thursday an ammunition depot near the city of Jablah in Syria’s Latakia countryside, close to the largest Russian airbase in the country, a war monitor said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the strikes caused massive explosions, which were heard across the area. While the origin of the drones remains unclear, it is suspected they were launched either from within Syrian territory or offshore.
Simultaneously, aircraft, suspected to be Israeli, were observed in the area, the SOHR added.
Meanwhile, the air defenses of the Syrian government, supported by Russian forces, responded by intercepting missiles for over 40 minutes, according to the war monitor.
The attack occurred hours after an Israeli airstrike targeted a building in the Mezzeh neighborhood of western Damascus, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to three others.
The Syrian government has not made any official comment about the attack so far.
