No U.S. troops injured in rocket attack in Baghdad – U.S. official

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A U.S. official said no American troops were injured in a rocket attack in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

Two Iraqi military officials told Reuters that an initial investigation revealed three rockets were fired near Baghdad International Airport.

One of these rockets landed close to buildings used by Iraqi counter-terrorism forces, causing damage and a fire affecting some vehicles, but there were no casualties.

The officials had previously said that at least two Katyusha rockets were fired at a military base where U.S. forces are stationed, but air defense systems intercepted the rockets before they could cause damage.

A U.S. official, however, stated that reports claiming U.S. military forces were the target were incorrect.

The U.S. official confirmed that all military personnel were safe and accounted for.

“All military personnel are accounted for and military forces were not targeted as had been reported,” the U.S. defense official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. official indicated that the U.S. government is aware of reports of an attack targeting the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Complex, which is a facility operated by the Department of State.

Since the Israel-Hamas war began in Gaza in October 2023, U.S. military forces in Syria and Iraq have encountered frequent assaults from Iranian-backed militias.
