Prisoner from Syria’s Daraa dies in notorious Saydnaya prison
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – A family of a prisoner received on Saturday news of his death in the notorious prison of Saydnaya two years after his arrest at a checkpoint of the Syrian government forces in Daraa Governorate, southern Syria.
A source close to the family told North Press that the family of the young man, Habes Nhab al-Shaman, learned of his death while they were at the government’s Civil Affairs office in the city of Daraa to obtain official documents.
Al-Shaman hails from the village of Shiara in the north of Daraa and was arrested while heading to Damascus at a checkpoint on the Damascus-Daraa highway.
On Aug. 5, the family of a detainee from Daraa was notified of his death inside Saydnaya Prison eight months after his arrest at a checkpoint.
The infamous Saydnaya Prison is located 30 kilometers north of Damascus. The prison is affiliated with the Syrian Ministry of Defense and is run by the Military Police. It has become infamous for brutal tortures after guards in the prison used excessive force against some detainees who staged a revolt in 2008.
Cases of people from Daraa being killed in the notorious prison due to severe torture have become recurrent since a government settlement was carried out there in 2018.
Amnesty International has described the prison as a “human slaughterhouse” and “the prison where the Syrian state quietly slaughters its own people.”
