QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The statistical office of the European Union (EU) Eurostat said on Friday that 70,375 first-time asylum applicants, mainly Syrians, applied for international protection in June 2024.
The asylum data published by Eurostat showed 70,375 first-time asylum applicants from outside of the EU were applied, a 17 percent decrease in comparison to June 2023, where they amounted to 84,730.
The data pointed out that Syrians continued to be the largest group of asylum-seekers with 10,165 first-time applicants, followed by Venezuelans with 6,340 applicants and then came Afghans with 5,930 applicants.
Additionally, subsequent applicants totaled 6,540, which is a six percent increase compared to 6,185 applicants in June 2023.
Germany continued to receive the highest number of asylum applications with a total of 16,770, according to Eurostat.
The highest rates of registered applicants in June, were recorded in Greece (45.4), followed by Spain (30.6) and Ireland (26.2) compared to the population of each EU country (on Jan. 1, 2024).
The data also indicated that 2,395 unaccompanied minors, mainly coming from Syria(675) and Afghanistan (405), and Egypt (255) applied for asylum in EU countries in June 2024.
Moreover, Germany received the highest number of unaccompanied minors with 725, next came Bulgaria with 300.
According to the U.N. Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Syria remains the largest displacement crisis in the world with over 12 million Syrians displaced.
