Gunmen rob international demining team in Syria’s Hasakah

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Gunmen attacked and robbed on Wednesday vehicles and personnel from an international demining organization in the countryside of Hasakah in northeastern Syria.

An employee from the international demining organization ITF, who wished to remain anonymous, told North Press that five masked men on two motorcycles attacked their worksite in the village of Jand wa Anad, about 17 km south of the town of Shaddadi.

The witness added the gunmen fired shots over their heads around 10:00 AM, and confiscated critical demining equipment. The gunmen also stole an ambulance, along with the personal mobile phones of the staff, all under the threat of gunfire.

He noted no injuries were reported among the organization’s members.

The ITF team typically operates with a convoy of four vehicles, including two for transporting staff, an ambulance, and a truck to carry demining equipment.

In July, an armed group stole money, ID documents, and mobile phones from two workers of Save the Children organization in Hasakah. No injuries were reported.
